I have recently bought the xfx amd radeon hd 7870, but my computer cannot recognise it. I think the problem might be that it has an 8 pin and next to that a 6 pin power connector. I have plugged the 6 pin one in and the fan does spin but I do not have another 8 pin. Is this why my computer cannot recognise it and if so where can I buy an 8 pin adaptor?

The adaptors (cables) come with the power supply. You havent connected the 8pin and the gpu simply doesnt have enough power to run.Buy a 550W power supply.

I have a corsair 600w power supply, so I'm suprised it doesn't have another 8 pin. Thanks anyway

I'm also surprised the PSU does not have at least a single 8 pin or 6+2 pin connector, is it a modular unit? If so you may have just forgotten to install the separate PCI-E leads/s that came with it.
If it has two 6 pin leads you will need to use one of them as 6 pin and use one of the 6-to-8 pin converter leads that (should) have been part of the graphics card accessories.
Or you could try here:

Or you could pop down to your local computer store, they may carry this type of adaptor.
