My games include RPGs like the witcher 2 and dragon age, Batman arkham asylum, Crysis, I used to play FBS like Battlefield but my laptop couldn't handle them any more

Off topic: can someone explain the 12 month financing? My understanding is I have to pay the full price of my purchase over 12 months rather than at time of purchase with no interest but if I delayed the payment for even one day after the period there will be interest that can reach up to 20%

Don't bother with the 690, you can get the same performance with 2x670 and it would be cheaper than the 690.

For 3000, you would want to put your money on a 780, not a 690.

I have a 3D monitor, and i will tell you that it is pretty dam smooth but not worth the money since you will not be playing on 3D most of the time. Get a 1440p IPS/PLX monitor which looks just beautiful for games.

Case would be your preference. You can add a 780 now or later on in the future, but you do not really need to since it should max out all games with decent FPS.

This would be amazon only:

That is a massive PSU - what exactly will he need the extra 200W for? Also for $3000 budget, upgrade to an i7 - it may not be better for gaming but for everything else it is. Not least because of Hyper-threading.

I put inside a 850W PSU incase you would want to SLI in the future, if not, drop it down to a 650W. It is also to cover the leeway of overclocking your system as it can use a bit more power.

i7 is just a waste if he is only gaming.

If he has the budget, an extra $100 wont hurt - especially if he wants to get into video editing in the future. A 780 is basically an SLI already - drop it to a 770 4GB, should be feasible.

770 is not essentially an SLI of the 780. The 770 uses the old 600 series platform(pretty much a remake of a 680 and making it cheaper) while the 780 uses a whole newer platform that can actually use 4GB vRam unlike the previous generation.(a reason why you should not buy a 4GB 770/600 series card)

2 770s would blow 780 out of the water but i would not choose that route because you can just add in a 2nd 780 later on in the future while having the benefit of 4GB vRam. Also that if you are not experienced with SLI, a single GPU would much better have less problems and would not need much fiddling.

I thought gtx 690 will cover current and future games and if gaming ever got that intensive in the future I'll just buy another 690
Do you really think that the 780 is better or are your recommending it because of the price?
For the CPU I'm kinda set on the i7

780 will be better - until the 790 and such come out, a 690 is a waste at the moment since there are upgraded versions. But for now, stick with a 780, it should max just about everything for at least a couple of years.

Nvm, thought you may have been with us on this deployment, your "in a month or 2" had coincidental timing with when we're going home.

690 is just junk, it will say 4GB but what they really mean is 2GB+2GB vRam which means it does not really use 4GB, it will stay at 2GB.

780 is just a better buy than the 770, it can fully use 4GB vRam(not like 770 4GB because the platform does not perform well with the 4GB and can sometimes cause latency issues) and it would be less trouble than a 770 SLI.

Pretty much, for a build, you would want to try to get the strongest card you can get. Besides the Titan, the 780 is the better choice being a bit slower and $400 cheaper(you can overclock the 780 to beat the titan stock fairly easy). Also that if you are going the 1440p route, 780 absolutely destroys the 770 because the 770 also has issues performing on 1440p(which is why 770 loses to 7970 in higher resolutions)

Thank you guys. Much appreciated.
So I'll ditch the 690 and the 3d monitor and going with 780 and asus pb278q or similar

That is the route i would go if i were to spend that much money on the system.
