Just wondered if anyone else has this issue. About 90% of the time the notification area will fail to load with the numbers replaced by stationary disc's that would normally be spinning as the information loaded.

Oh my, that's not right. What browser are you using? Do you have any odd plugins or extensions that could be preventing the loading?

Sorry its been a couple of days, Using Chrome and running addblocker. I did wonder if its possible that add blocker is jamming with whatever you guys are stopping members from getting adds with ?

Shouldn't be a problem. Though just in case, add us to your whitelist for adblocker. No ads here on the forum, except for the community announcement thingee at the very top, though it isn't really an "ad" and you'll want to keep an eye on that anyways for important info about stuff going on (like the ASUS AMA).

Running the W 8.1 preview now on a separate HDD and no such issues so far. Could be I have a software conflict on the W7 HDD.
However It has happened on a Vista system I have as well.
If I find anything I will update.

Cool, thanks!

Just a quick update,
After reading this thread http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1739937/tracking...
I have started to use Ghostery again. I have used it before however it does have the side effect of blocking some useful things on other sites so I discontinued using it.
That being said Toms is loading much faster with Ghostery enabled again. Toms is the only site I have regular page downloading/locking up issues with. this happens for me independently of which of 4 PC's I am using and its also seemingly irrelevant which OS I use, although the W8.1 preview seems a little better than either W7/Vista or XP.

I seem to have a similar problem.
I can see the post, but the spinner is active, even though nothing seems to be loading.
Refresh seems to take care of it.
Perhaps related is the interaction with compatibility mode.
When I select compatibility mode to get proper display formatting I may get the spinner.
And also related, Sometimes I post, hit enter, and nothing happens.
If I enter compatibility mode, my post disappears.
I have not sorted out exactly what causes what.
I am trying to limit the internet interactions which are going on to speed up your web pages.
To do that, there are some ad blocking and tracking lists implemented.

If you are in compatibility mode, you are gonna have a bad time. The optimal browsing setup for Tom's is any of the top 5 most popular web browsers, up to date as of at least -2 to -3 years ago with standard/medium security options as the default.

The compatibility mode icon shows up when windows detects some sort of a problem with the web site.
I have no idea what that might be, but it shows up on yours. On some pages, An image will partially obscure text, and compatibility mode clears that up. Unfortunately, if you select compatibility mode for one page, it will be used on other pages from the same web site which may be compounding the problem... I am using IE10, and it is updated to currency.

If I hit stop( the "X" it will stop the spinner and the page then behaves normally.

On which page is compatibility mode being enabled? Also, where are you seeing an image obscure text in IE10?
Thanks in advance!
August 9, 2013 7:46:15 AM

This page has the icon enabled.
I will see if I can re-find the pate with the obscured view.
Update... Sorry, I can't find the obscured page.
When responding to this, I had the dark blue icon.
I entered a response, hit answer and nothing happened.
When I clicked on the icon, my response disappeared and I got this panel which no longer has the icon.
I am confused.
If I am entering a long response, I am forced to save the response text in case it does not work.
Not nice.

Now the icon is not enabled.
What is going on??
August 9, 2013 8:05:05 AM

When clicking on the last link to your home page, I go to the home page without the icon. but the spinner runs continuously.
August 9, 2013 8:08:11 AM

I notice that this thread has a left facing black/white hammer in the tab header.
The home page link has a solid red right facing hammer.
A clue perhaps?

I get compatibility mode at work and i believe this is to do with reducing settings to enable the page to load properly, disabling the aero interface is the main thing I believe it is doing.
I could be wrong but I believe this is what is happening.

I would hazard a guess that people are running extensions for pop up blocking and the like, are there any of these that are known to conflict or cause issues ?

The only one currently that has been giving issues on a sporadic, intermittent level has been Ghostery, mactronix. geofelt, I'm not sure what you mean by "has the icon enabled". Is IE up to date for you, with the recommended security settings?
August 12, 2013 8:04:40 AM

I am using IE10. It is maintained to currency..
The icon I am referring to is in the address section along with the search icon, refresh icon, a filtered icon.
It looks like a rectangle with a jagged horizontal separation in the middle.
When I hover over it, it says compatibility mode view.
When I click on it, it changes from pale blue to dark blue, and the text is the same, so I don't know which means compatibility view.
When it is pale blue, the rotating activity icon will often be spinning. I can stop the spinning wither by the "X" stop icon, or switching to the dark blue compatibility mode.
I have been trying to stop all the junk extra internet accesses which is slowing down the basic page load times.
To that end, I have tried to stop doubleclick accesses, popups, and tracking via the abine tpl list.
I would love to simplify all of this if you have a set of settings that would let me opt out of such advertising and tracking.

Are you experiencing this on any other site, or just Tom's Hardware?
I'll pass this thread on to the devs and see if they can diagnose the problem from their end.
August 13, 2013 7:26:44 AM

I have no problem with other sites.

And.., perhaps related, when I click on the email me updates in the first post, I get 404 page not found.

The only way I get updates on this is to check the new updates section on the upper right of a forum post.

Been having a similar issue, except Windows 7 hangs/locks up only when loading tomshardware from a cold boot on an older desktop. Haven't tried resetting the PC to see if it still does it and the hang only happens on here. Since i have adblocker plus i'll whitelist tomshardware.. do i just put in tomshardware.com or do i need to add the forum as well? I don't normally whitelist because i have had some annoying ad videos come up (not from this site yet though).

Edit: i'm also running the latest version of Chrome. Haven't tried Firefox or IE.

I'm familiar with that first-load hang, though that may just be the page components themselves loading into cache. We're going to continue optimizing load time as we push forward with dynamic design modifications for increased mobile compatibility, and hopefully you'll be seeing your load times reduced in the process.
November 8, 2013 8:28:31 AM

As an update:
I have had the continuous spinner for some time.
I stop the load, and all seems to work ok.

Today, I installed IE11(windows 7) and the spinner stops!
All looks good now.

And, for what it is worth, IE11 sees faster.
