Question of PSU and graphics cards

Hi!

I have a question. So currently, I'm planning to get either a new graphics card or just a new computer altogether (Alienware X51).

Help me with the basics here but an Nvidia GTX660 "technically" couldn't get enough power from a 350W PSU right? Forums here and there seem to have a consensus 350W PSUs cannot run high end graphics cards but what confuses me is how the Alienware X51 manages to break that with its 320W power supply (GTX660)?

I would be happy to upgrade my graphics card to the GTX660 if that is possible!

My current computer specs:
Vostro 460 Desktop 2011
350W PSU
2nd Gen i7
8GB RAM
HD6450 (to be replaced)
Monitor (1920x1080)

If it's still a no go, what would be the absolute best graphics card for my PC with the specs mentioned above?? The budget limit would be $500.

Thank you in advance!

The GTX 660 is a 140W (TDP) card. That relates to 11.7A on the +12V rail(s).

The CPU is also a major amp draw on the +12V rail. Not to mention drives, etc. Depending on the specs of your 350W PSU, it would be very close. What is the make/model of your PSU? Generally, a larger PSU is recommended.

Thanks for your reply!

Dell YK6KW
100-127V ~/10A
200-240V ~/5A
Output: 50-60 Hz
Max Output Power: 350W
Connectors:
1 x 24-Pin Connector
1 x 4-Pin ATX Connector
1 x 6-Pin PCI Connector
4 x SATA Connectors

I see. And would a larger PSU make more noise/heat? Does it need a cooler or something?

You wouldn't happen to be able to read the nameplate sticker on the side of the PSU, could you? The +12V rail(s) is the most important. Dell used to put pretty hefty 350W PSUs in their machines at one time. That's why they came with a single PCIe 6 pin connector.

Standard tower, any ATX PSU will fit easy, follow those recommendations and you will be fine http://www.eggxpert.com/forums/thread/323050.aspx
And don't try to save a few bucks on PSU, bad one might burn, low power one will drop performance sooner. I usually recommend 50 watt above minimum requirement to avoid issues in the future.

Your PSU located on top, so, a good one, with thermal censor, will act as extra exhaust fan. I was using Corsair GS600 in the Inspiron 570, which is almost the same inside, was working as a charm.
