What can mid-board USB ports be used for?

So I'm looking at motherboards and have seen 6 USB ports on the board itself (inside the case).

Do components usually use these ports? What kind of components do?
Could they be used for normal USB stuff such as keyboard receivers etc?
Would there be an easy way to get wires out from these ports/would you recommend it?

Thanks for any input :)

Oh ok, those are SATA interface ports. You attach the dvd drive, the HDD, and any other parts that transfer data to those. If you ever looked into and old PC those are the equivalent of the big flat ribbon cables.
