can i format a laptop hard drive and then use it as the main hard drive for another laptop? if i can how would i go about doing this, i'm new to a lot the tech when i comes to computers. my girlfriends computer had a cycling redundant error and i have no idea how to fix that either. we started up the computer in safe mode because any other way would just give you a black screen forever so eventually after random intervals of time it decides to give a grey screen which was an acer E recovery management with two ways to recover 1.restore factory default 2.restore from back up disk 3.exit both options are greyed out cannot select them. so i was thinking to connect her hard drive to mine with an enclosure and just format it but i'm not trying to turn it into a money grubbing hassle. please any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Backup her data and make her restore disks asap; if its not to late already.
Then you can do what you planned. I'm using a pair of old laptop hdd's (160GB) as my servers boot and os backup drives.
