Hello,

I've had an ongoing issue with my PC for the past two weeks.

My specs:

OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit
Motherboard: Asus P8Z77-V LK Intel Z77 DDR3 LGA 1155 (new replacement; current board)
Motherboard I Replaced: MSI P67A-GD65 (B3) LGA 1155 Intel P67
CPU: Intel Core i7-2600K @ 4.4GHz
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 580 (Fermi) Classified ULTRA 3072MB 384-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 2x4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM
PSU: SeaSonic X Series X-850 850W 80 PLUS GOLD Certified
HDD: Western Digital WD Black 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache

I built this rig early last year with no issues whatsoever. As of almost two weeks ago I started having issues; my PC would freeze then crash when I played Deus Ex: Human Revolution, which I hadn't since it came out, so I figured it was some kind of issue with the game. It did it more often and ended up corrupting my save file so I said forget it.

Later the next day I was playing some Black Ops II with friends and it eventually did the same thing: froze but could still move my mouse (could not enter Task Manager), could still hear them on vent, etc.. so I was forced to reboot and encountered a black boot screen saying "Reboot and select proper boot device". I could eventually get back into the PC and everything was fine up until another random crash/freeze.

I tested the RAM and it came up fine (but if the motherboard was faulty is that even a reliable test?), some of DIMM slots gave false negatives on the test, my Ethernet port took a couple of minutes to work (once) upon boot, the freezing/crashing, etc.. so I ended up getting a new motherboard which ended up being a DoA (3/4 DIMM slots did not work, one PCI Express 3.0 slot did not work, some USB ports did not work, Ethernet port did not work, etc..) I ended up with an Asus P8Z77-V LK Intel Z77 DDR3 LGA 1155 which is in my case now.

Everything went perfectly up until yesterday where I was doing nothing on my desktop and my USB mouse went "dead" (no movement, no lights.. as if the USB port turned off). I was playing a few hours of Battlefield 3 with friends and it did it once again, the keyboard I think even did it for a split second (not 100%), and then I had really bad lag (I never get lag, networking or video) for about 20 seconds and noticed my CPU usage was up to ~99% (is this normal for BF3.. ?)

Could it be something other than the motherboard? Is it possible that I got another faulty motherboard, or is there another issue present here?

I appreciate your responses.

Are you overclocking?
I mean unless there is a dust build up causing overheating, or a fan broke causing overheating it looks like something has worn down and died.
If you are overclocking it could be the part you overclocked. You could also try new thermal past on the GPU and CPU to make sure they aren't overheating. Otherwise though it looks like your motherboard is probably dying.

The only other thing I can think of for you to try would be to reinstall windows and see how that goes. Could be something really wrong with it causing these issues. If that doesn't work, there are motherboard testers you could buy and try them on your motherboard. They aren't too expensive.

Only my CPU is OCd to 4.4GHZ with a Noctua heatsink. There is brand new thermal paste on the CPU. My case is completely clean and cables managed, all components are seated.

I haven't tried reinstalling Windows.. are there any drawbacks to that?

Thank you for the response.

Reduce your CPU overclock and voltage and see what happens.
Drawback to a Windows reinstall is you have to reinstall everything else, usually. Drivers, games, saved game files, any other programs you have on the computer.

Sorry I have been forever replying on here again.
Nostall is right that is what you should try next. Reduce the clock and voltage on your CPU and see if that helps, or if that doesn't do it you could also reduce the clock on your RAM. You may not have overclocked it but if it is warring down lowering the clock may fix the problem and if it does you know what needs fixed. Worst that could happen is it does nothing and you reset the RAM to normal so it doesn't hurt to try.

Also reinstalling windows is only a problem with reinstalling the programs like he said. Saved games if you go looking can sometimes be found and copied from program files and restored in the new install. It takes a little time but it can make a big difference.
