Selecting best answer

I currently have the ability to select the best answer on threads that are not mine.

You can do that if you have a badge of a topic tagged with that topic. My friend can do that as well, it seems to be perfectly normal.

What is the purpose of this? I can go into people's threads and select the best answer for them?

I just don't see myself doing that.

Users who have more than 5 Best Answers themselves can set Best Answers in threads. This is usually reserved for when the OP has not set a best answer, and yet one was definitely provided. Moderators monitor this feature for potential abuse, so bear this in mind. Not all users will use this functionality, but we wanted it to exist so that users could indicate a best answer in a thread where the OP may have abandoned. Or worse, given thanks, but not selected a best answer.
