i3 3120m or i5 3210m

I have a choice between three laptops

the model with the i3 is 600$ and has 4 gb ram , amd 8750 hd 2gb gfx (no disc drive 2 kg wieght)
the model with i5 has 6 gb ram , amd 8750 and is 710$ (no disc drive 2kg)
another model has i5 with 4gb ram and amd 7670 2gb and costs 680$ (disc drive and 2.5 kg)

i am looking for a laptop that will give decent gaming performance and battery life.
Price is a big factor. will the i3 limit the gfx performance ??
should i spend the extra money on the i5 or is the difference not worth it

I would say go with the i5 and the hd 8750 unless you really need the optical disk drive...

In my case, since I don't run CPU demanding titles, I3 will be fine, but if you like Battlefield, Farcry, Skyrim... those will be better in a i5 since it is a quad-core and i3 just a duo-core.

And betwen the last two, well... 50$ is almost nothing if you get better GPU and even more RAM.

I am sorry to say but the laptop i5s are not quadcore. They are all dualcore with hyperthreading....

i5's are also dual core and no disk drive means no optical /cd drive

but isnt the graphics card the deciding factor in game performance and so will the extra clock speed make any significant impact??

The extra clockspeed may help you in cpu intensive games like skyrim and starcraft.....Also the i5 will be much faster in general tasks like photoshop etc...

What is the hard drive as well on these. I have an i5 3317u and gt640m and my cpu turbos to 2.4ghz when gaming and the cpu is basically 100% on most games with gpu load at 99% so I just about get away with it. Your i3 3120m and 2.5ghz may just be enough but if the i5 model does have a bigger hard drive as well as the extra ram I would go for that. Also if you are into emulating an i5 is needed for perfect fps.

the i3 model has 750 gb while the i5 has 1 tb (i dont need that much storage though)

Definately get the i5 model then. What is the laptop model as well. Also 4gb of ram is only just about enough as a lot of it is used by the operating system. The 2nd one is perfect, can't believe its only $100 more for more hard drive space a cpu 3210m that is perfect for most current applications and more ram.

The 2nd option is much better and is definately worth the upgrade. The third option graphics card is old gen and gpu is much slower to. So out of those 3 the i5 3210m with 8750m is best option.

Wow its the 3230m but I just noticed you only get a 65w psu and a 3 cell battery with them.

I am starting to think you should get the i5 3337unow as there might be throttling on the 3230m as the temps go higher and the powre supplly cannot cope hence why the ulv scores higher on 3dmark.

acc the link you provided there seems to be no throtlling .. but the display review seems bad.
is it that bad or is good enough in its class

Your laptop is a slightly different model to the one I linked but should have a similar screen though as it is same type of series laptop. Notice 3dmark scores on the slower cpu scored bigger as the 65w psu you will get is to small the ulv will do better in that regard. Depends on which game you play. So its gonna be close on the power sujpply with the i5, I am now leaning on for you to get the i3 as you said it yourself you don't need that much disk space and the 4gb of ram is most like dual channel ram to. So get the i3 3120m and save $100.

The screen is below average but more then enough for good viewing experience. Your contrast ratio is double that of my acer m3 screen but my cdm is higher slightly so yours overall is better imo then mine. Its more then good enough for most users as it will look similar to most screens you get on laptops.

but both the processors have identical maximum power usage of 35 W so how will that make a difference??
