What is Tom's policy for picking Best answers? Can anyone do it or only the original poster?

Usually the OP should pick it. There are others who can as well but not recommended.

That is what I thought... I have no problem with either the original poster or a moderator picking the best answer, but I get a little annoyed when someone other than that picks it.

Except you're wrong clarkjd, the OP did pick the best answer, not the poster themselves. It even tells you who picked the best answer, and it was the OP, so I'm not sure what your issue is.

Did you read the link? or the post in the thread where the words "best answer by xxx" was posted by xxx?

Sure did.

Who was the original poster of the thread? Alain123, so what's the problem? The person who started the thread selected the best answer................

You are correct! I missed that! My apologies to all involved.

Four types of users can select a best answer:

• The Original Poster
• Any registered user with 5 or more Best Answers
• A Moderator
• An Administrator

The preference is always to the original poster to set best answers for solutions provided to them.

Hope this answers your question!
