Screen goes dark as if the brightness has been turned down.

I've had a problem with my monitor since yesterday, my monitor is fine until I watch a film/start windows/play games pretty much anything that is dark. As soon as it gets to a dark bit in a game/film/start up everything goes much darker than normal, even white writing will look more like dark grey.

I've tried reformatting my PC but the screen even went dim during the reformat. I'm pretty sure it must be my monitor, but I don't have the hardware to check so I thought I'd get some more opinions before spending on a new monitor.

If the monitor still behaves like this even when in your BIOS or ReFormatting, then it is likely the monitor. Dimming the screen when the overall output picture is dark is how some monitors facilitate dynamic contrast ratio (My Sony TV does the same thing, but not so much as to cause a problem) Try going through the settings on the monitor itself, see if you can adjust this dynamic contrast control somehow.

i know this is old but ill try to help anyway. check to see if your monitor has ASCR and turn it off
