Hello.

I am doing research on a new game server build and was looking for some input. Here are the proposed specifications:

*Updated version

  • ■1000 Total users simultaneously across multiple games
    ■1GB/s guaranteed leased internet line
    ■2 x 300GB 15K RPM SAS drive in RAID 0
    ■3TB Backup drive
    ■2 x Intel Xeon 2620 2GHz (overclocked)
■64GB 1333MHz ECC Memory (maximum speed supported by processors)
    ■Linux operating system

What are your views on these specifications? Do you think anything needs to be changed?

Thank you.

1000 users in which game(s)?

Some game servers can run 1 user for every 12.5 MHz on most processors, some need 200 MHz of power per connected user.

100Mbps also isn't enough for 1000 users no matter which way you cut it.

Specifying Linux as your hosting OS without listing the game software and the motherboard is also leaving out far too much information.

What is your budget?
How long do you want the server to last?
What back-out and contingency plans do you have for it if your plans change?

Thank you for your message. That was just an outline of the build. I was thinking a mixture of popular games such as Minecraft, Counter-Strike: Source, Team Fortress 2 etc. I could change it to a 1GB/s line. As for the software for running each game, there are various methods available. A dual socket motherboard by Supermicro or another decent make. As for contingency plans, it's a server. Servers are useful for all sorts of things. The budget depends on how much it will cost to build with all of the necessary hardware.
