Just curious about this. I have a GTX770 which easily runs this game over 60 fps at 1080p with everything maxed out. However I noticed that while researching GPU's before putting together my rig that it seemed like a wide range of GPU's could run it at 60 fps+.

Conversely games like the Witcher 2 gets a little over 30 fps with everything maxed out on my GTX 770, Far Cry 3 goes down to about 35-40 with max AA, Crysis 3 is at around 50 FPS with 4x AA.

So is the game just not very powerful in terms of graphics or has EA done a great job with optimization for the Frostbite 2 engine?

No. 'Maxing out' games sometimes is just not a good idea because the visual improvements don't make up for the performance hits unless you have an extreme high end system. If you disable Ubersampling from Witcher 2 you'll see what I mean.

A little bit of both- though I'm going to put a fair amount of credit to EA (more specifically, to DICE- EA just cuts the checks) and say that the BF3 engine is pretty well optimized
