Hi guys,

I have an aging i7 940 quad core, with 6gb ram and a GTX 285. Even though I got this 4 years ago, it still handles pretty much any game I throw at it really well (providing it's not DirectX 11, in which case it's incompatible with my graphics card).

So I'm thinking of upgrading. I'm not going to touch the CPU as even the 1st gen i7s are still pretty okay and I think I can get a few more years out of it yet. However, I'm thinking of upgrading to 16gb ram (as I do a lot of video editing) and getting an nVidia GTX770 to bolster my performance in games.

What power supply would I need for this set up? I currently have a 700w FSP700-80GLN, but it only has 2x 6 pin PCI-e connectors and the GTX 770 requires 1x 6 pin and 1x 8 pin. I don't know whether to risk a converter, I've heard it's a bad idea! I'm totally lost when it comes to PSUs.

The GTX 770 specs. call for a minimum 500watt PSU with a min. of 30amps. on the 12V rail.

Your FSP PSU is not one of the better builds out there landing in Tier 3 on this guide;

You can also google the model number and read some reports and reviews, and
www.johnnyguru.com has a review from 08 on a similar model and it didn't do well.
Be a pity to stick in a new card and have the psu take it out.

Recommend you stick with Seasonic, XFX, Corsair, Antec, Rosewill CAPSTONE, as quality replacement PSU's. Any of these would be enough to power your new card and additional RAM. XFX, some Corsairs, and the CAPSTONE series are manufactured by Seasonic, perhaps the best of all PSU builders.

Here are a couple ~550Watt:

ALL of the above have enough amperage and wattage to run you system with the new card.
ANd I agree with you, you can get a few more years out of that system.

Hi - This is way more than you need, but it is a gr8 price/perf deal,
XFX 750 (Seasonic built) modular that nets to $55 after $25 mir & $15 promo disc:

Oh - I do a lot of photo editing, and the CPU was even more important than
what GPU I selected for photo editing. Not sure that holds true for video
editing, but something to keep in mind.
