Starcraft 2 Heart of the Swarm

I know some people who want me to play this and I tried it like 4 years ago once with them and maybe I didn't like it because I really didn't understand it. Am I correct that the point is to invade the other people in a Tower Defense like scenario?

No, its not tower defence its a real time strategy game. You can play starter edition free and recently they allow people with starter edition to play the full multiplayer game while in a party with someone with the full game so you can play with them for free. It will have a very steep learning curve without having played the single player (and fairly even with) so be prepared to be bad at it for a while.
