Hi All

I have a enermax galaxy 1000w running:
i5 2500K
2x GTX 580 SLI
8GB RAM

In Sliverstone TJ105. (psu sits at the top)

The temperature seems to be very hot at the top of my case and the PSU fan seems be blowing hard when I turn the PC on. Not sure if this is bad news or if I should be getting a new PSU.

Any ideas what temp this PSU should be running at?

Cheers

If the case design is such that heat gets trapped up top, that is probably the problem. Top mount cases are not usually meant for heavy gamers. The PSU just draws in hot air from the CPU and the cards and can't cool itself well.

sorry for the late reply, thanks for the tip. So I need to get a new case as my current setup is good enough to fry eggs on!!

I was surprise to feel how hot the top of the case was. I thought it was the PSU.

Yes, it probably is mostly the PSU's heat your feeling. If you plan on gaming a lot and/or overclocking, it may not be a bad idea to replace the case with one that has (1) better airflow, (2) vented top, and (3) a bottom mount PSU.

I was looking into getting a new case. I like the look of:
Corsair Obsidian Series 650D
Corsair Obsidian Series 800D

I was trying to find something similar size to Silverstone TJ105.

Yes, either of those would be good. The 800D is an unusual design. Instead of a front fan, it has a floor fan that pull in air from through the bottom case vents, through the PSU compartment, and into the main section of the case. Btw, Corsair makes some of the best cases IMO. I have two Corsairs myself.

What cases do you have?

I didn't know that about the 800. I have carpets in my room where the PC will sit so I think floor fans would not be a good idea. Has the 800 been replaced by something else in the corsair range?

You should always have your case sitting on a board of some kind if it is sitting on a plush carpeted floor so the bottom mounted PSU can intake air easily.

When I referred to the fan being mounted in the floor, I was referring to the floor between the main compartment and the PSU compartment. That case has separate compartments (or zones) for the sections. Here is s look at it for you:
