Is my power supply enough for a 7970?

Hi

Im planning on replacing my graphics card (GTX 660 OC) with a hd 7970 now ive been researching this for ages now I cant find a answer.. the hd 7970 on amd's website says it requires a 500w PSU however it fails to mention what amps you need on the 12v Rail, I have seen that the 7970 requires anywhere between 25A-40A I know thats way out but still I want to know before i drop £200 on a GPU only to find it doesnt work.

My power Supply is a Antec TruePower 650W with 4 12v rails, 2 of them have 25A on the PCIE connectors the power supply has a combined output (total of all rails) of 52A will my power supply be enough?

its cool, u got a total of 50 amps, none of ur hardware uses more than 300 watt so its cool

If we have to put some numbers on it I would make this approach:

7970 Maximum Power consumption: 270W Source: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/HD_7970/26.html

So 270W/12V = 22,5 Amps. Let's say you want to put a safety margin of 25% on top of that then it becomes ~28,2 Amps.

I think you should be good. As you can see that is for the maximum power consumption. the peak consumtion is only 189W, which will give: 189W/12V = 15,75 A and with a safety margin on 25% = ~19,7 A.

well for a single hd7970 u psu is more than enough. it's a good psu. don't you worry for the amps and rail,it has enough to power to feed even two hd7970's. a single hd7970 requires one 8 and 6 pin pci-e power connectors and ur psu has two 8 and two 6 pin pci-e connectors which means that u can do Xfire in future if u want to.

Thank everyone for your advice....I will go for it What i might do to be safe as my PSU is modular is use one modular PCIE Connector from one modular port and another one from another one from the PSU itself to ensure the graphics card is powered by 2 12v rails each at 25A hopefully i wont run into issues! thansk again guys you are awesome!

It will only need a single lead, the card can draw up to 75 Watts from the PCI-E slot itself.
Only 200 quid for a '7970? Which one is it?

What do you mean? so i would only need to connect it to one 12v 25A rail? instead of connecting it to 2 via 8pin & 6 pin?

Perhaps I've got the wrong information, but it seems the PSU has 1x6 and 1x8 pin hardwired in? They will be enough is what I meant.
I thought we got a decent deal last November when I 'hinted' that a £212 HD7950 would make an ideal Christmas present!
