Well the title says most of it. The Wall of Text says the rest.
My office needs a new PC and have talked owner into taking my old gaming rig, minus the GTX 580, and then replacing my home rig.
I have an i7 920 with a 4.0 clock that handles my gaming etc. Will the 4770k be much of a noticeable difference?
My 920 OC is a 50% increase clock, up from 2.66. But getting a 4770k to 4.3(simple "safe" OC)
is only 7.5% above my current clock.
Makes me wonder the value of the 4770k. Since I've only overclocked once in my life, am I missing what the 4770k is capable of?
I've never gone in depth on OCs but I know RAM plays a part that I've never altered in BIOS.
With this RAM

the 4770k
and this MOBO

Would 4.3Ghz goal be too sheepish? Should I set my goal higher? Am I better off with a different CPU that can make larger gains(or similar for cheaper.)

The 4770K will be a great upgrade in multithreaded software. The 4770K will gain a few FPS over the 920@4.0 in gaming, but because of the lack of a massive increase in performance in gaming (when I care to put my GTX 570 in the 920 rig
), I am still rocking 1366. I would wait until Steamroller FX releases to see if you will get a larger increase by upgrading to AMD or if we will be stuck with the 4770K taking the crown until 2015. Whichever processor takes the performance crown in 2014 would be a worthy upgrade over the 920. Basically, the 4770K is better in multi-threaded software, but it does not have a large increase in gaming over a 920@3.8+, so I would wait a bit to see who takes the performance crown before upgrading. Hm, the problem I run into with that waiting is that the boss wants a primary office PC now. So as of today, I should get the 4770k? If there is a "chance" of a better one in 6 months, then I'm going to have to pull the trigger now. Boss man doesn't want to wait near that long. He would like it running Monday when he gets to the office. Since I'm bringing in my gaming rig, I'm not keen on losing my home PC for 6 months waiting on a CPU lmao.
So 4770k it is.

That will be fine, you can't go wrong with the 4770K, if you have to now, pull the trigger. By the way what is your gaming rig?

Go with it the 4770k
Many of the reviewers on newegg of the 4770K upgraded from i7-920/940/950 and were pleased.
Some from 2500K too. There seems to be much variance in the oc capability of haswell chips. It is my perception that he I7-4770K oc's better than the 4670K. I suspect that is because of better binning. I think I got only an average 4670K which seems to top out at 4.3. Still, that is plenty, and with hyperthreading, the 4770K will do better in editing.
The chip actually runs cool up to the point where you need more than 1.25v for overclocking. After that, a good cooler can only take you so far. Perhaps your liquid parts will do.
The Z87 chipset offers more 6gb sata and usb 3.0 which are nice upgrades.

How high ought I be able to OC with a Zallman 120mm and that nice breezy case? You should be able to overclock to around 4.2GHz fine. By the way I am still confused a bit
So basically, your boss will be taking your gaming rig updated with a 4770K and your home PC will be?

Boss is getting the old gaming rig that i posted the specs for(920@4.0 and all)In exchange, boss buying the parts to replace my gaming rig for my house.
His payoff in this is an already built PC that's plenty strong to run quickbooks
You might need a new card, considering the 920 cannot run without a discrete GPU
. Here is a good cooler http://www.amazon.com/Noctua-Heatpipe-Bearing-Cooler-NH... that will get you to 4.4Ghz easily.

Cooler for the 4770k will be 120 MM zallman just because I've already got one sitting on a shelf.

Ah, the Zalman should be able to do 4.3GHz, is it the all copper one linked or is it the "MAX" version?

It's the linked one. I pulled up the old newegg invoice from when I bought it(and it wouldn't fit in that case I was working with

Remember to use the LGA1155 mounting bracket, if it was even included, that may be an issue. Related resources
