Internet and connection problems?

Hi guys,

I have just put my new build together and am a bit stumped as to how to set up my internet connection. I have plugged the ethernet cable in to the mobo and the modem. But it isnt asking me for passwords or security keys like it does normally on my laptop? It connects straight up but only to a public network connection? I can browse the web but some programs dont like it!

Im using windows 8 by the way. Thanks!

Well i use internet but when steam tries to update it says it needs an internet connection!?
