Hello all! Recently my 6870 2gb cooling fan took a shit on me and now I am interested in upgrading. Right now I am looking at the 7970 6gb, is this overkill(I use a 30 inch 1080p tv as my monitor)? Would the 3gb model be more than sufficient to last another year or two? Currently I run with a AMD Phenom II 1090T x6 3.4ghz processor. Do you folks think this will be a bottleneck? Wondering if I am better off going with the 3gb model and upgrading to an I7. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated(including new part suggestions), thanks in advance.

I would go with the upgrade to Intel and 7970 3GB or GTX 7xx series. That 6GB model is only necessary if you want run more that 3 monitors at the same time, even, a GTX 770 is enough for that resolution.

The 1090T is a bottleneck for that GPU, 6GB or 3GB model.

Depends on what your requirements are if you do rendering or video editing I wouldn't go for just an i5-3570k but look at the i7's.

Do you have a budget in mind or is t whatever get's the job done?

....... oh and yes a Phenom decent as they are a HD 7970 is a top spec card and to get the full utilization out of it you'd want a better CPU.

Thanks for the quick responses! Byogamingpc, will that I5 and mobo last for a few years( I will just be gaming, I do not do any editing or rendering)? Outside of the GPU, I really don't want to have to upgrade again for quite some time(maybe swap out graphics cards in another 2 years and 3-4 for mobo/cpu). Again, thank you guys for your time, this is greatly appreciated. Diamond, my budget right now is right around 700 dollars.

If your going to be running a card of that level (7970) and its purely for gaming performance then yes I'd go Intel i5-3570k or the newer Haswell series.

As we asked do you do any rendering or have need for video editing? if that's not a priority then the i5 is fine if it is you may want to look at i7's.

Do you think a switch over to intel is completely necessary? Will I be severely bottlenecked if I don't? Just want to make sure before I drop that cash, haha.

You can make the change ALWAYS that you have the money, that change isn't obligatory now and you won't see any several bottleneck if you don't. Just do it if you have the money, if not, do it over the way...

All you can do in that situation is buy the GPU and try it, If Intel prices put you off that's fine you can stick with AMD but if the Phenom is becoming a bottle neck you'll be looking at something like the AMD FX 6 or 8 series.

Although the FX 8350 is virtually the same price as a i5-3570k then again you have to take into account the Mobo cost as well so it adds up.

The Phenom is decent, try it out you may be fine.
