How important is splitting up the RAM to run dual-channel: Use 2X4GB or oneX8GB?

How important is splitting up the RAM to run dual-channel?

I just bought a kit from Newegg which included an 8GB stick of Crucial Ballistix Tactical RAM which is specced at 8-8-8-24. Motherboard is an MSI Z87-G43. CPU is a Core i5 4670K. Usage will be primarily e-mail, web surfing and photo editing with Adobe Lightroom 3.6. I typically have a window open with MS Outlook (always open), Firefox with 6 to 16 tabs open and 2 of the tabs will be Youtube running music videos constantly.

Is 8 GB of RAM enough? Should I return the single stick for a pair of 4 GB sticks?

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I will be running Windows 7 64 bit.

  1. 8 should be good, 2x4GB allows to go dual channel which is up to a 10-15% performance boost in the DRAM and helps CPU, GPU, et al
