If you are looking for a gaming PC you should get an I3 3220. It is great value and will handle pretty well games, multitasking and demanding programes

What about the fx4100? I did look at th fx8350 but its a bit dear and at the minute i do doubt that I would have a game to utilise that processor.

FX-6300 is the best bang for buck cpu on the market. 6 cores and the processor is unlocked. $110 right now is an steal!

As an owner of the FX6300 I didn't see any bottlenecking or bad experiences when playing games like Borderlands, CIV 5, F1 2011 etc etc) on stock speed, However you see a noticeable difference when you overclock the FX6300 and I currently have it overclocked to 4.2Ghz

It isnt a power house CPU for sure as it only consumes 95w (even when overclocked). If you are planning on going AMD then get the FX6300 or FX8320, if you are going intel then get a CPU from the i3 or i5 series. I would get a 'k' model so you can overclock.

It realy depends on what graphics card you are pairing it with, if its a 6670 then an Athlon x3 or Pentium G is fine while if its a GTX 770/780 then you need an i5 or FX 8350 OCed.

How about this build?
Cpu:FX4100
GPU:powerColour hd7750 1GB
MOBO:M5A97 LE R2.0
Case:Zalman Z11 PLUS
RAM:4GB DDR3 1600mhz

Is this a good build? Are there any better parts for around the same price?

stay far away from any AMD FX X1XX (FX 4100, FX 6100, FX 8100). These are bulldozer processors. The first of their kind, and they don't have very good performance compared to the piledriver processors (FX 4300, FX 6300, FX 8300 ect)

Also I'd stay away from the quad core offerings. For just a little bit more (like 10-20 tops) you can get a six core AMD which will overclock better and have better performance with multi-tasking. Also with the consoles getting 8 cores, games will likely start using 6 cores soon.

If you can't afford to go with a ~130.00 processor, then like Simon12 said, get the Phenom II x4 965 BE.

FX 6300 is like $10-11 more with promo code and a far better chip. I would also step up to at least an HD7770. There is one with a promo as well.

What is his price range, do you know? If I could add my two cents, I would suggest the FX-8350 over the i5-3750k. I also am on a budget and looking to get more bang for my buck so I chose AMD. It is hard sticking to it because of all these Intel fanboys saying how much crap it is. But one thing that they have to realize is that most of us are on tight budgets. Yes, maybe the i7 series is still better than AMD's FX series. But the i7s are at least $100 more than even the i5 series.

I prefer AMD as well. Although I recommend a processor based on price, performance, user needs and budget. The 8350 a great processor but...

bolded what makes me think that the two cpus mentioned were out of his price range.
