Phenom II X4 945 broken pin

I accidentally broke cpu pin on my Phenom II X4 945 while trying to straighten it. However, PC boots fine, seems to work like before, done some Stress Testing with Prime 95. I want to know what type of pin it is, if someone can tell me?

Not sure what, but have seen many run for years with a missing pin, not something I'd advise, but never know

I'm assuming if there was any real damage caused by the pins, then the machine wouldn't boot at all.

So I wouldn't worry too much about it as it is running fine.

I kept the broken pin. Can i just put the pin in the socket, or its risky?

Never tried it and I wouldn't, there's electric current running through there and with nothing attached could short out all

Based on this document, you broke pin D31: http://support.amd.com/us/Processor_TechDocs/40523.pdf Finding what its purpose is may prove difficult (AMD would obviously know), but it hopefully is a ground pin.

If the socket is 940 pins, then pin D31 would be MEMDATA[15]. You should run Memtest86+ to verify there are no memory issues.

Isn't it L2_CADIN_L[1]1? My socket is AM2 however.

In your original post, you wrote that your CPU is an AMD Phenom II X4 945. I found 3 CPUs matching that description http://products.amd.com/en-us/DesktopCPUSideBySide.aspx?id=588&id=619&id=534 and according to AMD, they all are AM3. Rotate your picture to set A1 like it is in the PDF and you'll see that the broken pin should be D31, not AL4.

Ok guys, i'll run Memtest86 later to check for memory issues. Its almost two weeks since i broke the pin, pc never crashed, no bsod. I'll post if something happen. Thanks to everyone for the help, i appreciate it

You may not have issues if memory hasn't been maxed out (16GB). If it works fine with your current setup, then keep it as is.

GhislainG I have 4GB of memory. BTW can i run Windows Memory Diagnostic, or it isn't good as Memtest86? Thanks a lot for the help

Windows Memory Diagnostic is fine. With only 4GB of memory, pin D31 may not be used.

No errors found in both Windows Memory Diagnostic and Memtest86. Memtest86 was running for 1 hour and 20 minutes, 2 Passes completed.

Then you have no problems. You'll have to run the same tests if you install more memory.

You might be able to RMA it and possibly get something better in return. If not then you can keep using the CPU as is if there are no problems. Also there's a trick that hasn't been mentioned here. Just drop the pin in the hole where it's supposed to go and install the cpu like normal. It will function properly.

It's not very risky. As long as it works the way you're using it then you're probably going to be fine as is.. But if you run into problems it's something you can try.

Can't notice some performance issues since the pin broke. What do you guys think, could performance of the CPU be affected, and what software do you recommend for CPU Performance Test?
