This may be a daft question but I own a Dell Precision T7400 workstation that currently has a single Xeon E5430 @2.66GHz cpu installed. Now I know the motherboard has a second empty cpu slot and so I'm wondering if I purchase a second Xeon E5430 @2.66GHz cpu along with heatsink etc am I going to see performance increase to twice that it currently is?

I work do a lot of work in 3DS max and so this would be my main area of focus when looking for performance improvements. I've already got a very good graphics card and a fair bit of ram and so it's the cpu I'd like to improve upon.

Thanks in advance.

It'll certainly boost your performance
this is the average cpu passmark on 1 cpu http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Xeon+E5430+%40+2.66GHz

And this on a dual cpu configuration :

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Xeon+E5430+%40+2.66GHz&id=1234&cpuCount=2

you will certanly notice a boost in overall performance, when working with 3D studio Max, because 3d studio max runs on as many cores it can get hold of, assuming you use a quadro, tesla or firepro graphics card, and sufficient RAM, but you allready mentioned you have that covered,

i also did an upgrade on my T7400 from 1 E5410 Cpu to 2 X5492 Cpu's
and it runs like a maniac ;)

The way the system manages cpu's is not necessarily an equal split of the workload. With the Xeon 5400 series workload is shared to another core when the current one is at 100% usage. Check your resource monitor when using 3DS max and see if you are maxing out you cpu at any point, if so, then you would benefit from a second cpu.
