So...I recently bought an XFX HD R7870 Double Dissipation
...and since there it wasn't any here in greece, the shop I bought it from had to order it from somewhere else...now, I don't know from where it had ordered it but that is not the point.
When it came, the box and everything was exactly how I was expecting it to be ( I've seen unboxings ) but the card was different.
1) First of all, the fans seem slightly bigger and there is no XFX sign between them...
2) The card is "open" at the front and not aerodynamically closed ( sort of ) like the others I've seen...
3) On the Red bar it says: "XFX R7800 SERIES" instead of "XFX R7870"
4) But the BIG difference is that instead of two 6-pins inputs, this one has one 6-pin and one 8-pin!!
And not only I can't find anyone online with this card with one 6-pin and one 8-pin but EVEN THE BOX SAYS TWO 6-PINS!!!!!!!!!!!
However, I plugged in the gpu, and it seems to be working as it should...it reaches quite easily 100 C
( with gpu rendering benchmarks )...but my question is...which version of the card is this???? ( it says V4.0 on it )
I mean, If it is a newer version, then it's ok, but If it something like a BETA or a faulty version I would like to know it because I am going to exchange it then with the other version...
Thank you in advance!

I am not sure what version of the card you have. I am pretty sure it is not a new version, as new versions tend to be better. If the card hits 100C with that cooler, it certainly is worse. I would suggest using the tool GPU-Z to check and make sure it is even a 7870.
If it is a 7870, then it sounds like someone for some reason took a XFX 7870 and removed the original cooler, replacing it with the worse ones you currently have. They may have done this hoping they could make some extra money selling the coolers to someone else, since they will work on other cards.
A picture of the card itself, and the GPUZ would be helpful to figure it out. Like you said earlier though, returning it is still the best option. Unless they gave you a bigger card like a 7950 or something, which unless I am mistaken uses an 8-pin and a 6-pin power connector. Though, that wouldn't explain the bar that says "XFX R7800 SERIES"

I'm I the only one on the planet with this one?
On idle, the temps are around 47 C ... when it reached 100 C it was because I was doing some gpu benchmarks and it was working at 100% ... it was still really quiet though. Also my case has not a really good airflow.
Anyway, maybe it's even better than the normal double dissipation version because:
1) seems like it has bigger fans and it is open at the front ( that means better cooling )
2) it takes an 8-pin which usually bigger gpu's take...( 7950 )

Like the guy above was saying its a 7870 using Tahiti chip instead of the regular one. There is quite a difference, the 7870 has a few hundred less cores, and the default clock is usually different. Here is a review of a similar card from another manufacturer.
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/tahiti-le-7870-7930-bench...
The reason for the differences you pointed out is because Tahiti is the core type used in the 7950, but its cut down a little. It still pulls more power though, and thats why it has an 8-plug pin. It has a good bit more power than the regular 7870 though.
As for your heat problem, I would think maybe the thermal paste on it has gone bad or something? The card should run hot but not that hot. I would try putting some really good thermal paste on it then trying it, and if needed turn up the fan speed in AMD overdrive.

Ok!, thank you guys
I was expecting something like that...on the AMD Website it says that the HD 7870 only has 1280 stream processors...now this one, according to GPU-Z, has 1536...! Also the memory speed is 1250 Mh/z instead of 1200... and it has a slightly higher bandwidth...
So...I guess I won't return it and I am going to consider myself lucky...'cause even the box didn't "knew" what there it was inside
Also, I don't think I really have any heat problem now
...the temps are around 47 C on idle...when I push it, it reaches 80-90 C... it only reached 100C on benchmarks so I guess it is fine...my case airflow is not really good though...

Yes the difference with the stream processors is because the Tahiti core has some 2000 stream processors, and 25% of them are locked off. Most likely they have been laser cut. Your bandwidth is higher because the RAM frequency is up. Seems that XFX took care to give it a pretty good overclock before sending it to you. Just try to cool it down a little. Still an excellent card
By the way, would much appreciate being marked as best solution.

edit heh too slow
on the topic, the card seems to have quite nice factory overclock going on as well, tahiti le stock should be 925, I think....

Ahh that makes sense. I have heard that there are more than one type of thread on here but I can never tell the the difference
Also thats what I was thinking. The RAM overclock is pretty minor, but the clock on the core is pretty excellent.

Hmm...yes, I guess you are right...before buying it I searched a bit about these "XT/LE" versions of the card and all of them where having much lower clocks, like 925 Mh/z...
I'm pretty happy with this one now...!!
This actually reminds me. Like I said you probably want to boost the fan to keep it a bit cooler or something, but the RAM clock is only a small boost. You should take and boost the RAM higher. It should have the same RAM as my 7850, and I am running my RAM at 1450 right now. My bandwith is 185.

Quick question: With MSI Afterburner I was able to select which fan speed I wanted at which temperature...it seems that I can't do this in the AMD Vision Engine Center...I can only select one stable, manual, fan speed.
Is it possible to do that with the AMD Vision Engine Center or do I have to install MSI Afterburner again?

If by "AMD Vision Engine Center", you mean the "AMD Catalyst Control Center" I unfortunately don't know how to change the fan speed that way. For my card on default the fans sit at 20% and jump up to 40% tops.
I have the option to take over in manual fan control and set a speed for the fan to run constantly at, but not have it speed up only at a certain temperature.
If the "AMD Vision Engine Center" is a different program then I am not used to it. You may have to use the MSI Afterburner.

Yes, I will use the MSI Afterburner...
The AMD Vision Engine Center is exactly the same thing as the AMD Catalyst Control Center...they are the same program...
The AMD Catalyst Control Center is just an old version of the AMD Vision Engine Center ( they just changed the name afterwards ) ...I used to have it when I had the HD 4850...( my previous card )

I have just bought this card, from Greece as well. I had the same queries and worries about the version of this card. After a little search i found out that i was 'lucky' because this seems to be a rare 'Tahiti' version of the card. This means, from what i found out, that this is actually a 7900 (newer)chip that was put on a 7800 model. What worries me though is the temperature this card works. I ve seen it reaching 92 Celcius under farcry and diablo. I ve contacted the manufacturer and waiting for their respond. Try contacting me to discuss about out issues.

With MSI Afterburner I sped up the fans a bit with a custom profile and now it seems to run colder but sometimes it still goes over 90 C... I contacted XFX and they say that may the gpu thermal grease is gone and I should return the gpu and exchange it with a new one or I should tell the shop to aply some new thermal grease.
Anyway, I believe that my case's airflow isn't good and that doesn't help at all the card to stay cool. ( maybe thats why it gets over 90 C )
However, I consider myself very lucky
and I'm also really happy with this gpu!
yo,
1) it has the 7950's tahiti core!
2) it has more stream processors!
3) it has amazing clocks ( 1000 Mh/z core clock instead of 925 Mh/z which most 7870 Limited Edition have )!
4) it has bigger fans!
Anyway, it's awesome!

I too have a "strange edition".

Mine says R7800 Series like yours, but it only has 2 6 pin power, and the rest of it just looks like a normal 7870.
GPU-Z says it's pitcairn, so i'm not as lucky as the rest of you.
Mine overheats rather quickly too...half hour of gaming (max of far cry 3 or crysis 3) at 1440 x 900 and the temps hit 90+ degrees celcius,
one run of unigine heaven and it hits 100+!!!
I'm trying to contact newegg/xfx but it's been about 8 days and still no reply

oh, I just saw your answers xD ...so apparently there are a lot of versions of this card... The one that you have, marco_89, I think it's just the classic one with a new design... Also, nope, no blue screen for me either...
In my country - Poland - there is an offer of buying these card, I mean "XFX Radeon HD7870 XT Tahiti LE 2GB". I think I'll get it, since it is for 167 EUR (225USD - I'm really doesn't know what country are ;P )
I'm afraid although about temps... And I'm pretty sure you cannot change thermal paste, because of warranty... -

Guys, for everyone who is having temperature problems...just install ''MSI Afterburner'', you can create a profile which changes the fan speed of the gpu at any specific temperature.
Mine doesn't exceed 72 C at 100% load now!
( after 20 minutes of testing ). Here is a screenshot of my profile:
Hi, thanks for your reply.
I tried to:Set various MSI profiles including setting fan speed to 100% as soon as temperatures reached 60 degrees.
Reconfigure my cabinet to allow more air in the case.
Keep the side panel of the case open for easier heat dissipation.
Sadly, none of these seemed to work, so i replaced my GPU for a full refund and bought an nVidia GTX 760. Now temps never go above 81 degrees. But i admit that performance of this "strange edition" was a bit better than that of GTX 760
. Got a nVidia GTX 760 instead which never goes above 81 degrees.

I just got the same exact one for my new rig! Good to hear that its actually better than what I expected. I plan to buy another and crossfire them but was just wondering, do I need to try and get another like it, or would I be ok crossfiring in a regular 2x6pin version? This is my first solo build so I'm relatively new to all this

Also I have this card and I have trouble getting it to run under 90 degrees at load
I always manually set the fan to 100% too
But it is a great card! After having looked up benchmarks for all the programs I needed to run, I was delighted and amazed at the performance trumping these benchmarks. Indeed the 'normal' Tahiti LE version is only about 5% worse than the 7950, and with its overclock I wouldn't be surprised at all if this was better AND over £150 cheaper here! -

If its newegg you ordered from you could try and request an exchange and tell them what version you need. I'm in the same boat as you though I have yet to try and order my 2nd one for fear of the same thing. If you are able to get the proper one, whether through exchange or just getting the right one in the first place let me know.
