I just purchased my second SSD to go in my new laptop; I own Samsung 840 250GB and a 500GB.

I've been reading about over-provisioning but can't decide the proper thing to do with these drives. I've heard that they have "built-in" over provisioning by Samsung, but how much? Since the Pro models are 256 and 512 respectively maybe that means its 6GB and 12GB over-provisioned?

Regardless, I see that the samsung magician utility recommends about a 10% OP.

So let me get this straight, I bought a 500GB ssd, which is probably a 512gb with 12 gb OP. Then when I put it in my machine, it only shows up as 465GB (I'm used to this with years of purchasing HDD's and then finding they show less capacity in Windows). Now I'm recommended to OP another 10% equal to 46.5GB?

This is almost as bad as taxes!

So what's the deal, should I OP that extra 10% or not?

Standard overprovisioning for most solid state drives is about 7%. There are some exceptions. A few years ago the original OCZ Agility 2 allocated 28% of available space for OP. A few other models allocated 13% of available space for OP. It varies by company.

I have two Samsung 256Gb ssd's. The normal available capacity is 238.5 GB rather than the advertised 256GB. When I increased overprovisioning to the recommended 10% the space allocated for OP increased to 23.8 GB. That left both ssd's with 214.5 GB of available space.
