i7 860 60c is it too hot?

Hello once more everyone, just a quick question. I've recently taken to streaming, and during my testing I've noticed what I think to be too high temps on my cpu according to speedfan. At 720p 30 frames a second preset using xpslit I'm reading 60c+ temps.

Example: http://www.twitch.tv/generalfunyun/b/442561781

I've wanted to bump up to 1080p 30 frames but that rockets cpu usage to 100% and around 70c+. The cooler I have is the one I had when I purchased this mobo, it's barely better than stock, anyone have any decent cooling recommendations?

(Also as a quick side-question is the 4770k much better for streaming and video encoding than my old i7 860?)

Thanks for the help and responses!

60C is not very good. I would get either of these coolers and overclock to 3.8GHz. The 4770K is a decent improvement, but overclocking your 860 is the best value all in all. What is your full system specs? Do not disable HT when unstable, or you will actually get reduced performance, only disable the C states, if it is unstable, redo your OC a bit differently.

60c @ stock for an i7 on what is basically a stock cooler, isn't actually all that bad. I would get a better cooler. A coolermaster hyper 212 is a great choice. If height is a problem, the TX3 is decent as well. The 4770k would probably be much faster for encoding video. Do you want to overclock and how much are you willing to spend?

Sorry for the late response school has been tying down my schedule lately! I decided I will end up buying the Noctua NH-D14 and giving that a whirl, I've been wanting to upgrade to the 4770k, but the clear improvements aren't so obvious to me. For instance I know if I try and stream at 1080p at 30 frames a second with xsplit I'm certain I'm always going to be sitting at 100% cpu usage. I doubt it would change with the 4770k, but then again maybe it would, any clue?

The 4770K is a good upgrade too. Overclock for now. What is your full system specifications?

8 gigs of RAM (Cheapo crap, this is a cannibalized old Gateway gaming PC from 2010) EVGA GTX 670 FTW Corsair TX-650 (Not sure if it is Haswell compatible, I know they have a newer tx-650 that is 'haswell ready') an old gateway motherboard that game with the gaming system (mother of god how I want a new motherboard, I don't even have the manual for it!) and a cooler master HAF X. (I know I really need to take advantage of that full tower tank.)

Protips:

A good option\excuse is to get a new 2600K combo (well priced upgrade): http://www.ebay.com/itm/ASUS-SABERTOOTH-Z77-LGA-1155-Intel-Z77-HDMI-SATA-6Gb-s-USB-3-0-ATX-Motherboard-/200951495756?pt=Motherboards&hash=item2ec9a47c4c + http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Core-i7-2600K-3-4-GHz-Quad-Core-BX80623I72600K-Processor-/121148189896?pt=CPUs&hash=item1c34feacc8 + (Optional http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233186)

Alternative motherboards : http://www.ebay.com/itm/ASUS-Maximus-V-FORMULA-LGA-1155-Intel-Z77-HDMI-SATA-6Gb-s-USB-3-0-/221265266333?pt=Motherboards&hash=item338470069d or http://www.ebay.com/itm/ASUS-Maximus-IV-Extreme-Z-LGA-1155-Intel-Motherboard-Excellent-Condition-/271230377649?pt=Motherboards&hash=item3f26971eb1 (Still $100 cheaper than the equivalent 4770K setup (With or without adding new RAM) Speaking of RAM, please don't buy tall RAM (preferably buy the one linked and sell the old ones or use your current) or else the NH-D14 will not have enough clearance and it will not fit.

Your Gateway mobo will likely be locked down in the BIOS and not overclockable, so it is a good idea to invest in a new setup to put your graphics card to use. The 2600K has close performance to the 4770K for a much cheaper price, I heavily suggest it over the 4770K.

Thank you for all your help! As a last question, what do you think of the new upcoming Ivy bridge-E processors? Specifically the 4820k, is it worth holding out for?

IMO, the 4820K will be a MUCH better chip than the Haswell 4770K. I'm sure it'll OC like a champ!

I should say, I may go Haswell, but only because of the cool motherboard tech at a cheaper price point. But if you can afford a decent x79 Motherboard. GO FOR IT!

+1

4820 or 3820>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>4770K

Will be running rampant on ebay to find a cheap X79 mobo for him :p

Wow that is a great board for a great price, only thing that has me concerned is it is used. What if it doens't work on arrival, and does it still have a warranty and such? o_O

He has a return policy of 14 days and 100% satisfaction. The 3820 is much better than the 860 and better value than the 4770K. http://www.coolerguys.com/840556096924.html?productid=840556096924&channelid=FROOG&gclid=CLCG_o_i-LgCFdAWMgod-BIA6A, if you want to mount the D14 on the 3820, you'll need this. This RAM will help a lot too. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231517

Overall, I highly suggest you invest in this setup.

It is becoming extremely tempting, though I really have the itch to wait for the 4820k for the latest tech, and the 14 day return policy is re-assuring do you know if buying used usually comes with a warranty? What if five months down the road it goes caput and the product isn't registered in my name?

Ask the seller if the Sabertooth X79 still has a warranty that you can register, it likely does have one. It is very unlikely you will have that issue, but if it does help you, you can get a Rampage IV Formula (Better than the Sabertooth) for $300 that is brand new and will have that warranty. The 4820 will be a small upgrade at best, and the 3820 will overclock better, I would get the 3820 now, not to mention, you will likely have to dish out a lot of cash for a new board if the ones I linked you will not be updated for the 4820, which will also be more expensive than the 3820. Either way, the 3820 or 4820 WILL DESTROY your 860. http://www.ebay.com/itm/ASUS-Rampage-IV-Formula-LGA-2011-Intel-X79-Brand-New-/290959284260?pt=Motherboards&hash=item43be865824
