Question about why transfer speeds aren't matching up.

I am trying to figure out some questions about the read write times of my hard drives, I am on a Gigabyte motherboard with an 3770K processor, 16GB of ram, a Samsung SSD and a Nvidia 560 graphics card.

I am also am running an external Mediasonic Raid 5 with 4 (3TB) Seagate Barracude drives in the enclosure and one external Startech hot swap enclosure (also using a 3TB seagate Barracude drive in it). All drives are using sata.

When I did some speed tests using the AJA software, I found the following.

Raid 5: Read speed 200, Write Speed 214

Startech Enclosure: Read speed 189, Write Speed 179

When I am physically transferring files from the Raid to the Startech enclosure I am getting sustained speeds of 156Mpbs. If I go the other way my speeds keep dropping all the way down to 40Mpbs or less.

Any idea why this would happen?

How is the startech attached to the pc?

Its attached with an esata cable.
