I've been thinking of buying a liquid cooler to for a PC I want to build but I've seen reviews that say some of their liquid coolers leaked but haven't heard what causes them. Is there a reason they leak or how to avoid them? I heard that I shouldn't over tighten or under tighten it.

If its a custom loop tightening to the correct torque and simply double checking the fittings to be sure they are sealed is just about all you can do, and all you need to do to make sure it dosent leak. If its a closed loop theres really no chance it can leak, and nothing that should cause it, other than miss use.

If its custom, chances are you didn't tighten the fittings down hard enough to engage the o-ring seal.
If its a CLC (like a H100i) then any leaks are a manufacturing fault unless you cut/yank the tubes yourself, nothing you can do about that but get an RMA.
