I an trying to decide between the AMD 7990 and the 780 this is my first build and money isn't a big issue to me. I want it to be able to play 1080p games on ultra I am also trying to future proof it a little while by doing duel and triple sli when needed.
My build
I5 4670k
Corsair professional 860 watt platinum
Corsair 8gb Vengeance

Since you have a strong build, I would recommend an MSI 780 Gaming, if you wish to wait a tiny bit longer, the MSI 780 Lightning, probably the fastest single GPU card in the planet. People might say that 2 760s in SLI will outperform a 780, which is true, but a good overclock makes the difference minimal, and some games don't scale all that well. Another thing is, a 780 is already good enough, it's overkill, it will run Battlefield 3 on ultra with over 130 fps, which is crazy. Since you have a great motherboard and power supply, you should opt for a single 780 and in a year or so, throw in a second one, and you'll be future proof for a long long time.

Sense I am all ready $ 1'500 in should I upgrade the CPU to an i7 and power supply to the 1,000 watt class?

Sure, go for 780. An i7 will deliver better performance and is more future proof, but it makes the big difference in CPU demanding software, games, not that much, still better than an i5. 1000 watts is just overkill, you have a platinum rated 860 watt PSU by Corsair, that's enough power to handle 2 overclocked 780s. Now, I just read that iChill released a card you might be interested in, it's a watercooled, extremely OC'd GTX 780. You will need a 120 mm fan slot I believe, either 120 mm or 140 mm, need to check which fan is used on the Accelero Hybrid. Anyways, if your case has decent cooling and airflow, can host 2 140mm or 120mm fans, you should be good to go with SLI 780s factory watercooled. And even an i7 will be cheap compared to 2 780s, you'll have to overclock it, which means you need a decent CPU cooler, the NZXT X40 (140mm) or Corsair H100i (x2 120mm) are both great CPU coolers and will allow for decent overclocks.

To be honest your 4670k is fine for gaming and a i7 wont do much impact and for the admission i dont think its worth the upgrade and you can overclock your cpu. As far as getting the 780 it would be more future proof then upgrading to a 770 and with 2x 780s you would be seeing some insane performance which would outbeat a single gtx 690. Im also in the works of dropping another 780 in my rig as well and recently i had the 770 as well but wanted to be more future proof with the gpu and the thought of going sli sounds good right about now

I have read that in a lot of place the i7 is a waste of money if just for gaming.

Definitely the ATI 7990 is way better. Though I am a somehow nVidia fanboy. The comparison between these two cards doesn't fit.In terms of raw power, but just the latency issues is what breaks the deal on the 7990. Ever since people found a way to look at the frame variances of the cards, AMD has been in a little trouble on SOME cards. In all, the 7990 is indeed a really good card!

If you dont care about power consumption, heat, or the loudness of the 7990, then get it. But if you want a card that's more efficient, alot less heat, and less hassle then get the 780. I do understand your trying to futureproof but its kinda hard to do that since we are still waiting on the 9000 series from AMD. The 780 is the card for 1080P, and 7990 is overkill. So in all just get the 780, and add another in order to re-futureproof.

All you need to do is Google "7990 coil whine" and you will see just one the big reasons why the 7990 was discontinued after only a couple months on the market. Here, Tom's Hardware even did a recording of the sound:
"the high-pitched whine is noticeable enough to illicit raised eyebrows from observers correctly ascertaining that a graphics card shouldn’t be making those noises."
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-hd-7990-revi...
And TechPowerUp also noticed the coil whine:
"What is a major issue, though, is the extremely annoying coil whine the card emits as soon as it runs a 3D application. The whine is generated by resonating power circuitry coils and is a problem that can be resolved; it's just an engineering challenge. NVIDIA did so for the GTX 690 and GTX Titan; both cards don't have such coil whine issues. On the HD 7990, however, it is very apparent, and I don't understand how AMD missed such a glaring problem. I talked to five other reviewers and they all confirm it, so it's not an isolated issue. What makes the whine even more apparent is that it is constantly changing pitch and volume, drawing your attention to it by effectively overpowering the fans' "whoosh" sound."
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/HD_7990/31.html
But even more concerning was the lack of game profiles for popular games leaving only one GPU working:
"However, we've also seen many games that do not scale well, and they make up a significant portion of our tests. Out of eighteen titles, five did not scale, or worse, showed negative scaling. These are not small titles, but big AAA games: Assassin's Creed 3, Batman: Arkham City, F1 2012, StarCraft II, Skyrim, and World of Warcraft. What really surprises me is that this long list is the same as the one we had with our reviews of HD 7990 "New Zealand" implementations by board partners, like the ASUS ROG ARES II and PowerColor Devil 13. So either AMD does not care or can't fix CrossFire support with these games millions of people play."

are you guys kidding with your answers? the 7990 just took a massive price drop to 700$ plus 8 top all rounder famous game titles. Currently the 7990 will smoke any game & rape the 780 & titan to shreds. to ppl suggesting the 780 are mostly fan boys or just dont know about gpu. are u ppl actually comapring a 3gb 780 384 bit with a 6gb 7990 768 bit & actually saying the 780 will win?

The 7990 is composedly has 2 7970 in it. So i think the 780 will be better. Because crossfire has still some issues.
Or get dual 7970? Because 7990 has been using the stock cooler. And this run hot round 80C at load (stock clock) and it better to
Get 2 7970 of Sapphire. Best AMD GPU Manufacturer with outstanding cooling! You'll never regret it.

For the price point yes a 7990 looks good but crossfire is a big no no..I would take the 780 then go into sli in the future and call it a day and that would outpoint the 7990 tbh. Crossfire needs to be fixed for sure

I still wouldnt trust it. OP do your self a favor and get the 780 you honestly wont regret it and to save you time from buying a 7990 then coming back on the forum saying i should of listened like most people do
Anyone listening to that video of the noise produced by the7990 would immediately drop it from his list.
The 13.8 drivers do not work on DirectX 9 games (COD, Skyrim, etc.). They also do not work for Eyefinity multiple monitors. What does that mean? You will only get the performance of a single GPU under those circumstances. If you play Skyrim, then $700 for a 7970 is a huge waste of money.
The 13.8 drivers also don't fix the usual problems with Crossfire, not least of which is microstutter and lacking support for many popular games as reported by TechPowerUp above. You can see why doing some in-depth research is going to prefer the more reliable and quiet option that also delivers more consistently smooth gameplay.

a single gpu card would be ideal like the 780, but for the money i dont think the 7990 is worth it when you could get near 7990 performance out of two 7950s in crossfire. newegg has the msi twin frozr 3 7950 for sale right now at just under $210, thatd be $420 for two, about 2/3rds the price of the 7990. once you clock both 7950's at a modest 1100/1500, even on a single 1440p monitor your never going to see the difference in the few fps you would gain from two 7970's(7990). of course the crossfire issues are still there, thats why if you can just go with a single gpu solution.
