Computer turned off when I was away for 5 minutes came back tried turning it back on got a pop and a burning smell this just happened PSU still turns on I even just did the paper clip trick with the 24 pin connector, decided to plug everything back in turn it on mother board cpu phase lights come on fans turn on just not the GPU fan and I get no display, I would check to see if gpu is the problem but don't have a onboard gpu could the psu be bad. I don't see any visible damage on mobo.

GPU is fried. Recommend checking if your PSU and GPU are compatible for wattage.

Probably a gpu issue. Where does the smell come from? The PSU is also probably fried

I know before the pop the computer ran just fine which was about a month or longer, PSU model RP600V2-S-SL its a rosewill 600w GPU is a Sapphire Radeon HD 7770 Ghz edition.

I checked everything PSU GPU MOBO no capacitors are damaged from what I can see in the psu at least I'm not opening that up no smell either it was just after the pop I smelt it.

The display not showing and gpu fan not spinning makes me think its the gpu, now what makes me think its not the psu my DVD drive still working I can hear the HDD spinning mobo is getting power case and cpu fans still spin.

Im just so confused I hear a pop and smelt burning but no visible damage and I don't want to get a new gpu and have the psu be bad and fry another gpu

It still sounds like a psu issue. If one ever blows, it doesnt just stop working, it pours current into the mobo, etc. I would check it before you start with everything else

So you only think is the PSU not so much the GPU or do you think both have gone bad.

The gpu is probably blown, but it is usually from a faulty psu

Yea I have read a lot that point to the psu frying out the gpu or just the gpu frying on its own.

So the best thing I could do is test my current psu or replace both see which works and what doesn't.

Is there anything else you think could be wrong? Could the PCIe slot have fried out or would the ram make it stop working if those fried out?

The extent of the damage will be hard to determine over a forum, but the mobo and cpu might be damaged.

I can only hope for just the psu or gpu being fried, is there anyway I could possibly further test other components for damages other then replacing the psu and gpu to see if anything else is dead or working.

Not really. If it is, then you could have a fried machine. Did you see anything else experience a similar issue? Like an electrical appliance? It might have been a power surge...

It wasn't a power surge my monitors are on the same surge protector and they were left on.
