alright im new to the whole computer building stuff so i need help is this good for gaming

Sounds good for gaming. If you can spend up to $1000 you should get a solid state drive as a boot drive, 120gb go for around $100. It will make your computer much more responsive, more reliable and your boot times will be down to about 10 or 15 seconds.

I'd get the 7950 3gb for the same price over the 7870.

Yeah the 7950's are on sale lately. I saw one today on newegg for $200 after rebate and it was the boost version.
