dvdrom no solutions to non-recognized disks?

What is the big mystery about failed dvdrom drives in windows. This seems to be a common problem, I have two laptops with the same problem, they won't recognize inserted disks. Nobody can figure out what the problem is. I've been to every website I can find that offers troubleshooting advice but none offer any solutions that work. They all have the same answers, and suggestions, but none work, ie. upper/lower filters, reinstall driver, clean lens, try different disks, device manager recognition, bios recognition, update driver, remove burning software, microsoft "Fix-it, microsoft "troubleshooter", microsoft "support" are useless. The drive is less than a year old, and not used all that much. Why is this such a major, and common issue?

Did you try to take out the dvd drive and put it back, may be a bad connection of the drive.
