Hi there!

I'm building a new, desktop system to replace my beloved MSI GT683DXR (i7 2630QM, 16GB RAM, 570M GTX).

It's not supposed to be a purely gaming rig as it will also be used for video editing, 3D modelling, design and rendering (Octane Render to be precise). Moreover, I would like it to be upgradeable in terms of additional GPUs for rendering, SLI gaming, as well as additional RAM (therefore I will need a powerful enough PSU and a decent case).

Currently, my MSI GT683DXR is hooked up to 3 monitors (1680x1050 and 2* 1280x1024) and B&W MM-1 usb speakers which I intend to use with my new PC. Later, replace the screens with 3x FullHD monitors.

This is the (in my view) 'optimal' configuration that I've came up with so far:

CPU: Intel Core i7-3930K 3.2GHz 6-Core £461.00
CPU COOLER: Noctua NH-D14 SE2011 £64.90
PASTE: Arctic Silver 5 High-Density Polysynthetic Silver 3.5g £4.58
MOBO: Asus Rampage IV Extreme EATX LGA2011 £332.15
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 £236.78
SSD: Corsair Force Series GT 240GB 2.5" SSD £166.50
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 3TB 3.5" 7200RPM £93.96
GPU: Asus GeForce GTX Titan 6GB £836.14
WiFi: Asus PCE-N53 802.11a/b/g/n PCI-Express x1 £31.04
CASE: NZXT Phantom 820 (Black) ATX Full Tower £198.24
PSU: Corsair 1200W ATX12V / EPS12V £211.34
BR: Asus BW-12B1ST/BLK/G/AS Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Writer £76.86
OS: Microsoft Windows 8 Professional (OEM) (64-bit) £100.11

Would that be a good investment? I would be really grateful for any useful tips and comments regarding my choice of hardware, since I'm sure that you guys are a lot more experienced than me when it comes to PC building!

Thanks!

Not sure what you were going for, but if your budget is $4500 and you want premium all around then this is my pick. What country are you ordering from and I can be more accurate? But ultimately it's only a good investment if you can use all that performance. I would never spend that much on a computer since tech changes so fast that $10k today will be a lesser experience than $2k every other year over the same decade (not that I recommend doing that either, just pointing out how wasteful "future-proofing" is for the average consumer).

Raf92,

You have a good build, all compatible and am sure it will make you happy, with the video editing/rendering, etc, might want to give thought to kicking up the DRAM to a 2133/CL9 set, think you'd be happier ;)

OK, for GPU processing (both Octane render and CUDA acceleration in Premiere) you'll need to turn SLI *off*. You'll also need it off when using your 3d applications, as they do not use SLI.

Look and see if your Octane license includes render nodes. If it does, use your existing box as a render node.

And you may want to consider waiting for Ivy Bridge-E to ship.

Thank you very much for the replies! Good to know I am on the right track with the build :) However, I 'm unsure about the case though, Phantom 820 is huge. That said, would the Corsair Carbide Series Air 540 be a decent case for the build and a future (hopefully) upgrade to 3x Titan SLI?

Thanks again!
