i am building a gaming rig and i have got just about every part, but i dont know what cpu to get, i am thinking about getting an i5 3470 (non k)with an Asrock z77m mobo, or i could get a FX 6300 with an asus M5a97 mobo with a good cpu cooler for overclocking.the Fx path will cost about $30 or $40 more dollars than the intel (if the cost of a cooler if 90 or so dollars).
this will be paired with a 7870 (already purchased). what are some cpu cooling suggestions if i do go amd.

6300 is no slouch but against that i5 why not match the price range with a 8350. An 8350 is a bit more future proof with upcoming titles but some games of now and definitely of the past call for that i5.

yes, but the 8350 with an oc will put me too far over budget, but 8350 stock clock is it a match for the i5?, i was wandering if the 6300 over clocked would meet with the i5 stock?

i dont think you need to spend 90 bucks on a cooler, a decent air cooler for 30 will do the job and makes the 6300oc variant much cheaper

So get a 6300 with a hyper evo 212, can i get a cheaper mobo to oc with? or a better psu? ( current one being corsair cx500)

Yes, I use a CM Evo. It's awesome for cooling and quiet. You don't need to spend a lot of money on a CPU cooler to get huge gains. A fx-6300 with a decent mobo will give you 4.4-4.6GHz overclock. Also, a 500W PSU will be enough for the system with a 7870.

Keep your CX500. If you are willing to learn about overclocking and tweak your system then get the fx-6300. If you simply want to play games and what not and don't care about tweaking it then get the i5-3470.

I may learn to oc, i have never done it, is it hard to do? Also would the evo 212 have clearance for corsair vengance ram?

Yes overclocking has become relatively easy. It'll give the fx-6300 at least a 20% boost in performance. Just do a little research and make sure you do the overclock slowly. It takes time to do it right.

Yes the 212 has clearance for the Vengeance RAM. You will place the RAM in the 2 blue slots for RAM. and You'll have room for your cooler.
