Graphics card stops screen working

Just managed to get my build working for the first time, but had to take out the graphics card to get it to boot up. I have managed to install windows and the MB drivers, but as I start up the system with the graphics card plugged in, the screen doesn't show what is happening, although i can hear windows sounds through my speakers. Any solution to this problem? Should I install the GPU drivers before I plug it in? (ASUS GTX 760 video card is being used)

please note that the monitor is correctly plugged in, and the system works fine when the graphics card isnt connected to the MB
