Hello,

I currently have a q6600 on a p5w dh deluxe (8 years old and still running strong) and just purchased a Asus z87-deluxe. I just need the processor to complete my upgrade.

The 4670k goes for $235, the 4770 oem is $289 at tigerdirect. I have been waiting for any haswell i5/i7 deal. is it worth it?

I have never overclocked before, but i might want to, who knows. i know games only utilize 2 cores now, but what about in a year or 2? i will plan to keep this processor for at least 6+ years.

My computer is used as a HTPC with gaming every now and then. i currently have gtx460's in SLI. and my new system will have 16gb ddr3.

i was going to give it another week before making a purchase (unless you guys think there will be some labor day sales). If no deals came up i was going to settle for a 4670k at $235. I was hoping to get the 4770k for under $300 shipped.

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thank you,

Carlos

I suppose it is possible to keep a CPU for 6+ years as long as your expectations are not too high. My Q9450 is over 5 years old now and it will be going into my HTPC case pretty soon.

The i7-4770k has Hyper Threading (HT) and it is not currently used in games. Since HT has been around for a while I don't expect games to use HT in the future either. However, if you encode movies using software that can take advantage of HT, then I would buy the i7-4770k since the price difference is only $54.

sorry if i seem rude, but i specifically asked between these 2 models for a reason. I always see this on forums, people ask "should i get nvidia XX or nvidia XXX" then there is always that person that says "get an ATI YYY".

people are asking for help differentiating specific parts for a reason, and if they are open to other ideas they will make that fact apparent.

thank you for your recommendation, but i am only looking for reasons to purchase either the 4670k or 4770.

i actually built my computer with an e6600, then about 2.5 years ago picked up a q6600 cheap on ebay. i later added a SSD and then upgraded my 9800gtx+ to dual gtx460 cards 2 weeks ago. i don't even feel a real need to upgrade, but then i bought those 2 cards for $50 each (slickdeals) and it started this damn spiral, i had to go and buy the Asus z87 deluxe for $180 on ebay and then the ram..... i should have never bought those cards!!!!!!

Good points, i do use convertXtodvd and dvdfab to burn blu rays/DVD's from time to time. i will look into those programs to see if they utilize HT. i was referring to the non K, but I'm guessing your points still stand true.

No, he mean't 3570K. Lol, It's a better CPU than the 4670K. It's cheaper, and it OC's further. IMO, you'd be much more pleased with a 3570K. Or, if you want Hyperthreading and the 5-10% benefit from that, you could get a 3770K for less than a i7 4770.

May as well go with a i7 4770K then. The K is a symbol that represents overclocking. Check if you live near a Microcenter, they sell the 4770K for $279.99. IMO, with that board, it'd be worth it. LOL!

And no, the 3770k and the 3570K are not supported by z87 motherboards. And vice versa.

Yeah, i am leaning towards the 4770, i think tigers deal is for another day or 2. i am from san jose, we use to have a Microcenter in Santa Clara, but they have been gone for a year. and that is a in store price only with a *prices vary per store.

I have read some forums with angry customers stating that even their local Microcenter wouldnt sell the i7 for $279. though i did take a print out to frys here in sunnyvale, but of course they wouldn't match it.

I think you should ge a phenom ii. lol jk

Really it doesnt matter which one you pick. I would say get the 4770k, unless you are also planning on upgrading something else and you could use the money you save for that part. If you aren't planning on buying a new gpu, then a 4670 would be fine. Only difference you will notice is video editing. So if you do plan on doing "A LOT" of video editing then the 4770k woul make more sense. If you are not going to do a lot of video editing then get the i5. As far as gaming you will not notice the difference. So it's up to you to decide on which one to get.

Right, you'd need a Z77 board... 3570k/3770k > 4670k/4770k

I already tried plugging in a phenom into the z87 board, no matter how hard i tried, i could NOT get it to fit!!!!! please help!!!!! :)

If i will buy a new GPU then go for 4770, i don't plan to anytime soon, but i might upgrade if i find a deal in the future?

yeah, i was 99% leaning towads i5 if comparing $235 vs $335 for i7. but with the 4770 (NON-K) at $289 it makes it a little more appealing.

thanks for the help!

Look, if you're looking to overclock with that board and you can afford it, get a 4770K, not the 4770. If you're looking at a 4770 vs a i5 4570K, You'd be better with the i5 if you're over clocking. But if you're not, the 4770 will be fine. But a non-K series processor won't do that board justice.

i usually do buy tech that is a year or older to get 90% the power at a fraction of the cost. but many of the z77 boards i was interested in were going for the same or more than the z87 boards i was looking at. trust me, if i had even a first gen i7 i would not be upgrading at all, but coming from a q600 it seems worth it to go for the z87, i just wish there was a new (from authorized seller) 4770k for under $300 shipped. that would make up my mind real quick!

i really liked the z87 boards. the asus deluxe has 802.11ac built in. z87 also has more usb 3.0 ports and intel sata III ports.

There's a reason the Z77 boards aren't getting any cheaper and the Z87 boards are...

Just saying...

i couldn't find any major deals on z87 boards (at least mid-high end), the best deal was a 4670k with a msi mpower ($420) combo, you saved only $20 bucks(but had to pay tax, it was from frys).

i figured, if the price is the same/similar for 2 items, might as well get the latest version with better specs. i happened to get lucky finding a "new" white boxed version of the deluxe, though i had to contact asus to get a i/o shield, luckily, they are gonna send it for free which is cool of them.

but if i would have found a GREAT deal on a z77 combo i would have jumped on it.
