I have a Toshiba L675D-S7016 laptop...I need to replace the hard drive, which is a 320GB, 5400RPM, 2.5 made by Toshiba. I would like to upgrade to maybe a 500GB...could I use a 7200RPM in this laptop or should I stick with the 5400RPM? Also would like to use another brand other than Toshiba. Any suggestions?

I copied and pasted your laptop into google, came up with this:
http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/retail-product.jsp?poid=478507

It comes back with Sata 320 GB Hard drive. So you can upgrade it to 500GB SATA. With regards to 7200 or 5400 RPM, it comes down to battery time. The faster RPM means it chews more power.
That and can make the laptop faster at 7200 RPM or a bit slower with 5400 RPM.

If you're simply using this for surfing the web while your prof in college talks, then get 5400 RPM.
Make sure the drive you get is SATA.
