Why not, its cheap. A pair of internal 1tb drives is alot of space and cost about as much as a pair of 500gb's.

Use the second one to store internal backups to (including OS). Use an external to store an additional copy of your important files, os not included.

About 25 years ago I had several large architectural firms as clients. In those days they could fit their multimillion dollar jobs on one or two 300MB hard drives.

AFAIK, all the buildings are still standing.
