Is there any reason to have 64 gigs of RAM?

I've had an interest in purchasing the Asus Rampage IV Extreme. (Until I realized I might as well wait for DDR4's release and price drop a few months later) I've noticed this board can support up to 64 gigs of RAM. Whenever I see impressive benchmarks I always get a sense of security in my computer being able to handle whatever I throw at in a timely and stylish manner. So, I have to ask is there any reason to have that much RAM? If I understand RAM right applications would have more memory to assign pointers to, so wouldn't someone with that much memory be able to have an absurd amount of apps open demanding high system resources?
