Using i3 with new Gigabyte MB?

My motherboard, an Intel Peter Cove, after only 3 years went dead. It came together with an i3-540 3.06 GHZ 4MB. I am thinking to buy an Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H motherboard and still use the old processor for a year or so. I am not sure if the new Gigabite will accept the i3. Are there any arguments against this idea or should I make efforts to get a new i5 or i7?

Thanks for the quick answer. So I am thinking to buy a i7-4770K or a i5-4670K which would both work with the Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H, correct ? The price difference is not huge but still. Which one would you suggest? Finally, what kind of CPU cooler should I take. I am thinking about a Corsair Hydro H90 140mm High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler. Are their arguments against it ?

Hi, that i3 540 is an LGA 1156 Processor and the Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H motherboard has a LGA 1155 socket, the new intel socket is LGA 1150, so yo will need a new CPU in any case as it wont work in either of those last mentioned sockets

Interesting articles. Thanks for the links. I really appreciate your help. I would order from Newegg and the budget is up to 3 K. What do you think about the gigabyte z87x-d3h or should I go higher? Which graphic card would you suggest?

No the i5 4670 and 4770 uses the LGA 1150 socket and you'll need an 8 series chipset based motherboard. So you would need to get a Z87 chipset based motherboard. Give me your budget and the name of the online retailer you would be buying from so i can suggest a motherboard for you. I'm not a fan of liquid cooling, even if it is a closed-loop liquid cooling system. Some air coolers can outperform liquid coolers. Have a look at the following:

As you can see, a good quality air cooler can perform the same as some liquid coolers.
