I was about to re-use an older case for a new build, but then decided to get a new case instead because the old case doesn't have a cutout in the motherboard tray behind the CPU area.

I'd still like to use the old case for something though. Is there anyway it could be used with a newer motherboard? Would I need to mod it?

It's a mid-size ATX tower. It will easily fit a regular ATX board.

Don't see why it wouldn't support any modern day ATX board then :)  I don't think you'll need to mod it, if it could house an unmodified ATX board in the past, it can still do so.

Well, my concern has to do with the CPU backplate not fitting/clearing due to the old case not having a cutout on the tray like newer cases do.

Perhaps if I can find a CPU cooler that uses a very flush-mounted backplate design that doesn't protrude then I could accomplish this.

For my recent build I used the Hyper 212 Evo and the backplate just seemed to protrude too far for me to be comfortable sandwiching it into the old tray without the cutout. I was (still am) contemplating modding the tray (not the motherboard). :-)
