acer erecovery won't complete. I need help.

I have an Acer Aspire 5733. Last night before I left for work the mousepad froze on the laptop so I restarted it. When I got home today from work the laptop was still on the startup screen. I restarted it multiple times. Used the windows repair option that came on and every time it proceeded to say that the problem couldn't be fixed. I haven't had the chance to backup the files. So I decided to to do the restore with the data back up selection on erecovery because I have my art portfolio on there from my classes. It went through the backup up until it restarted and now its just stuck on setup is starting up services. Will I have to just go into erecovery and restore with factory settings erasing everything for the process to complete?

it sounds like the harddrive or the ram is having issues. Does Acer have built in diagnostics you can run?

it must be some hardware issue, you may got it repaired.
