Hi! I know this is a long shot but I really need some advice, please. I backed up all my files from my old computer which was a dell Inspiron windows 7. I put them on my external hard drive which is a verbatim 1 tb that plugs into USB port and gets power from a cord plugged into the wall. Everything went fine. I bought a new computer yesterday that is a dell with windows 8 since the previous one did not survive a reformatting. Anyways my new computer is all set up but when I plug in my external hard drive it says it needs to format it and can't access it. Otherwise everything's fine, no physical damage and no bugs were ever evident until now. I plugged it into my friend's computer which has windows 7 and it asked to format it on his too. Is everything lost? Can I give the drive a new letter or something? How does that work? Thank you so much!

you may try to connect the external hard drive to other computer and see whether it can be detected.

Thank you yes I already did so. As I said, when I plugged it into my friend's computer it asked to format the drive there as well. He was using windows 7.
