how do I fix my optical drive in xp

[desperate by now]

locks unless a recovery disk is used, tried all easy fixes: regedit, values etc-
lost it after a virus, cant reload xp 0S cuz cant read the drive

Can you see the drive in device manager? If so, delete the drive from device Mgr. and reboot the system. Windows should re-install the drive on re-boot.
