I am having a hard time deciding between using a:
-Quad sli gtx titan setup
-Tri sli gtx titan setup
-Quad sli gtx 780 setup

for 4k gaming. I HAVE NO BUDGET LIMITATIONS for which setup to use, I just want to know which setup would give me the best possible frames for 4k gaming.
I know that the gtx 780 can oc to over 1100mhz with the proper card, such as the msi gtx 780 lightning edition, but I don't know if the titan can overclock that high. The gtx titan though has a lot more ram in it, which could be a benefit for high resolution gaming.
I am concerned for quad sli for the gtx titan, because on some benchmarks at 2560x1600 or 1920x1080 it actually did worse than a tri sli with the gtx titan and tri sli with the gtx 780.
So which setup would be the best for 4k gaming at ultra settings for any game?

If I was to use a 4k display, I will only be doing a 2-way SLI GTX Titan. More than 2 on currents video cards and drivers will not perform nicely. I'd rather be safe with 2-way SLI rather than risking $999. Besides, 2x GTX Titans performs well on 4k displays.

two or three 780s is the way to go... no real reason to opt for titans

you should plan to be upgrading your gpus frequently at that resolution, so dropping 2-3k+ on graphics cards is a bit silly, i think... the scaling is just not good past two cards and 4 cards is often really buggy

agreed dont get more than two cards however at that resolution he shouldnt have to upgrade his cards anymore than any other resolution especially if he get two titans however i would opt for the 780s as titans are too expensive hell you if your willing to turn down a couple of settings then two 770s would do read the article i linked its perfect for your predicament.

But pretend if you were to have no budget

Pretend though that you have not budget, and you would want the best performance possible. Still would a quad or tri sli setup bet the best?

But what if you were to have no budget limitations at all?

But what about just for only a 4k monitor?

crysis 3 maxed out with 2xSMAA on 2160p using two stock level titans and a 3930k will run between 26-50fps with an average of just 38fps. the dips are still well below the 40fps minimum and far from close to the magic 60fps minimum. we are at least another generation(2015) away from meaningful 4k gaming, unless of course you plan on playing old games and not new ones.

How would two titans fair with 3 or 4?

Yeah I saw that machine and it is a beast. But they could upgrade their cpu to something better though. But 4 titans are pretty crazy, and are actually worse than 3 or 2 titans.

Yeah, I just found out about those today! I'm totally going to change my mind on those titans, those babies love to crack out gaming at 1440p or over, so 4k will be the sweet spot for those at quad crossfire!
