my hdmi port on ps3 is not working anymore so to get back to the 1080p resolution i got a ps3 component cable and hooked it up with my hdtv, but there's a problem, the picture is blurry, especially the text and i tried to play with display settings but no luck. when i put resolution to 1080i the picture improve, but it's still blurry and it's really annoying. is there something i can do to solve this problem? the cable is sony's and the tv is grundig. 32 vle 432 bf

I doubt the HDMI port stopped working. I believe you have plugged it into the wrong HDMI port on said TV. It has a port for HDMI w/ protection, try to find it.

Also, you need to set it to these settings:
Resolution: 1920x1080
Refresh Rate: 100 Hz

trust me, i've tried all 3 hdmi ports on tv, and i know they are working fine so it must be that the hdmi port on the ps3 has died.

Weird... anyways, you cant get 1080P via comp, you need to use HDMi, Warranty service, maybe?

actually, i can get 1080p through the component cable (you can try it yourself if you don't believe me) but the problem is that it's blurry, i'm trying to solve that problem, why is it blurry? i've seen vids of other people with 1080p through component and they don't have any problems. any suggestions?

Im sorry, I know some games HAVE to use HDMI for 1080P, your problem might be refresh rate, bum it up to 100, if you cant try 70, im not sure component can carry that fast, however, why not send it though sony for service if its still covered. Otherwise, Best wait for a PS4.

Try just unplugging the white and red AUDIO cables and leaving the blue, green, and red VIDEO component cables in to see if the image quality improves. My audio cables were causing a purplish ghosting effect. Interference perhaps? I ordered a cheap toslink optical audio cable for $2 on eBay and will see if that works in in conjunction with component video cables on the PS3.

that's exactly my problem, it creates purplish ghosting effect, at 1080p when i unplugged red and white audio cable it goes away but not completely, but however when at 720p i do the same thing it goes away completely! it's really confusing and annoying...so if i buy that optical cable i will able to play normally at 720p, but that won't be the case at 1080p, right? when you try it please tell me are you able to play normally now with that configuration at 1080p.

My cheap TOSLINK/SPDIF cable arrived today.
However, upon closer inspection, my junky little 19" Westinghouse 720p SK19H210S only has optical audio OUTPUT, not INPUT, so I wasn't able to send the PS3 audio via TOSLINK to the TV. If your hdtv does that that input, it could be a solution for you.
Maybe I just have cheap PS3 component cables, but unplugging the audio component cables does make the purple ghosting almost completely disappear at 720p. I can turn on 1080i and 1080p in in the PS3, but it doesn't seem to make a difference on my 720p tv.
Once the games start up, the purplish ghosting had been hard to notice, unless it was thick white text on a black background.

my tv also has only a optical output so i guess we're in the same situation, no luck for us...i'm no expert, but maybe there is a some kind of adapter for this problem, or maybe we could try buying ps3 av to vga cable to connect with tv (if you have a vga port on your tv) and see does that solves our problems.

Only thing I want to say is THANK YOU!

Been trying to find a solution for this problem for weeks ( http://community.us.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-3-Support/Need-help-with-HDMI-problem-on-PS3/m-p/42995693/highlight/false#M322698 ) ... Nobody was able to really help me there.

So yeah I tried with 2 different component cables. Both of them had the purple ghosting problem ... Removed the audio cables and it pretty much disappeared (80% of it at least)

By the way, it's not a real solution but for your optical wire problem ... just buy a soundbar I guess. That's what I have.
