is it possible to just upgrade a CPU's GigaHerts per second?

My computers CPU runs at 1.86GHz and i have overclocked it completely, i was just curious, is there any way at all to get the CPU to run at a faster rate of GHz?
preferably over 2.2GHz
The CPU ran at 1.86GHz before i overclocked it so im not sure if i did anything wrong when i overclocked it to not make it run any higher?

Yes, i know nothing about computers...
my friend overclocked it and he doesnt know why the CPU's GHz didnt go up either...

It will help a lot if you give the brand and model of your CPU and motherboard. Also how did you attempt to overclock it?
