i purchased an alienware m14rx2 in april, so its not the new version that just came out this summer, but the graphics card option was a Nvidia 650m, which is OK, but not what i need anymore. i was wondering if anyone knew any options for external graphics cards that could possibly work.

Intel i7 3630qm
Nvidia 650m
16 gb ram

Yeah external graphics cards were in concept with a few working setups a few years ago, since then, there really is no way to do it. You can buy a 150 dollar pci slot, the 50 dollar power supply, THEN the card, but at that point if you want to spend that much can can save up for a new desktop. So in short, you really cant do an external card practically, theoretically you can. But its a lot more, and a lot weaker than a card internally.

what if i used a usb converter to the express card slot? and is there a problem if the nvidia 650m on my computer is a chip that is attached to the motherboard?

That chip is either integrated into the board, or part of the cpu so that cant be changed, as for the slot, like I said, the slot costs almost as much as the card, plus you need an external power supply which can get fairly sketchy. Its simply not practical.
