Need a budget and what hardware you plan to use from your current system for starters. You will need a new motherboard, ram, and cpu at minimum.

E2200 is a desktop chip. Mobile pentiums would have a T instead of an E.

the E2200 uses a socket 775
the i3 uses either a socket 1156 or a socket 1155

therefore to upgrade to an i3 you would need at least a new motherboard, CPU, and memory

why wouldn't his memory still work?

i3 motherboards use DDR3 memory

yours is most likely DDR2 memory; however, if it is DDR3 it will also depend on the speed of the memory

If the RAM is to slow will the MOBO just not recognize its there?

The thing that matters most about DDR3, is the voltage. Motherboard will recognize slower DDR3. Too high of memory voltage will kill newer iX series cpu's.

1st generation (Nehalem) Core i3 = Socket 1156 - Basically dead at this point in time

2nd & 3rd generation (Sandy Bridge / Ivy Bridge) Core i3 = Socket 1155 - Basically "dead", but both are still available and viable for a budget build. Ivy Bridge would be better.

4th generation (Haswell) Core i3 - Socket 1150 - Not compatible with older socket 1156 or 1155 motherboards.

All Core i3 CPUs will require DDR3 RAM.
